House Boat Floor Plans

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

House boat floor plans are pretty amazing. You’ll be surprised at how easy it is to fit so much space into a tiny houseboat. We bought a 1987 Sumerset 62 footer that only had about 900 or so square feet of livable space, but it was enough and through the use of proper house boat plans, I’ve been able to increase that almost a hundred feet which is pretty substantial.

Maggie, my wife has sure enjoyed the extra space. I know that probably the most difficult aspect of living on a house boat is making the most of the limited space. Forget about a basement first of all. And it’s harder to build a second level on top of a houseboat too.

The project I’ve been working on in developing better house boat floor plans has given the extra space to the kitchen, bathroom and the main bedroom. It has taken me over a year tinkering away at it. It’s touch to work and live in the same space. When we were living on land we had a garage and that’s where I could store all my power tools. An in fact, that’s where my “wood shop” if you can call it that was.

But we’ve managed it, and I’ve even built a small plywood boat using plywood boat plans from the same fella that I got the house boat floor plans from. This plywood boat was a gift to my first grandson. He loves it. And when he comes over to stay with grandpa and grandma we hitch it to the back our house boat and drag it behind it. He likes to watch it follow us along. “Aye, aye captain” he says all the time when he’s with us.

So if you’re looking for house boat floor plans or even house boat plans, then I’ll be happy to share with you the resource that I’ve found that has made my life a helluva lot easier. It took me months just to research house boat floor plans on the internet before I found this little gem. I’d suggest you don’t bother with it the hard way and just go grab these boat plans and be done with it.

There are catamaran plans, dinghy plans, plywood boat plans, skiff plans. Practically whatever kind of boat you want to build this resource has a boat plan for it. Of course I made use of the extensive house boat floor plans which really gave me some great ideas. And as I’ve said before, it saved me a ton of time and helped me find an additional 100 or so square feet of livable space.

House Boat Plans – How it All Started

Thursday, November 12th, 2009

Hello there, I wanted to share with you how I got started in finding the house boat plans that I needed to really spruce up my houseboat. It’s been a long time coming that my wife and I were able to afford a house boat and then retire out here on Vancouver Island on our house boat.

We had to look for something cheap, as we both haven’t earned a lot of money and we needed something that would help allow us to live the dream of house boating but at the income level we could afford. We’ve raised 3 kids and as you know, that can be expensive! But we love them.

Anyway, Maggie and I found a nice 1987 Sumerset Houseboat 62 footer that has 2 great bedrooms and all the amenities we would want. This way we can have friends and family stay with us when they’re out visiting on the Island. It only cost us $79k 5 years ago but we searched long and hard for a deal like that. Plus it did require a little bit of TLC. I’ve put another $15k into it mostly redoing the house boat floor plan.

It’s been a lovely project and we’ve spent the last 5 years living here on it and we just love this lifestyle. I started this blog to share with all my house boating friends I’ve made over the years, tips and tricks that I’ve learned in house boating. Even if you’re just interested in wooden boat building or yacht plans or even plywood boat plans you’ve come to the right place. House boat plans are crucial in finding the best way to develop your house boat to it’s fullest potential.

As a kid I used to build little boats and sail them on the ponds around town. I’d develop these rudimentary house boat plans. It was a wonderful way to spend my summers. To build a boat is very rewarding I’m sure you know what I mean. It doesn’t matter if it is a small dinghy or even a house boat or as in my case just a little miniature boat. But the thing is, you’ve got to build a boat using a proper boat plan. This will make your efforts so much easier and more enjoyable.

I have a friend who is building his own yacht now with the advice I gave him on where and how to find a proper yacht plans. It’s coming along nicely, and I can’t wait to spend some time on it! But back to house boat plans and where to find them.

Happy Sailing,
